"The Big Surprise"
Finding artists like Trickster Guru--especially at this stage in their career—is what keeps us up at night trolling the web for new music gems. The group recently released a duo of tracks that have a refreshing and independent tone that stands apart from trends in the current indie music scene; and they only have 700 Facebook fans (as we write this)! It's like striking audible oil to us. Discovering a band that has this level of potential so early on in their career almost makes you wonder if the band themselves know what's in store for them!?
They are clearly fresh to the LA music scene, only a handful of tracks floating around to date. They boast a brand of psych-rock, but it's not your average vibe of today's "psych-rock" revolution. Their musicianship has more depth to it, resembling Tame Impala in their approach to exploring a deeper part of the soundspectrum than most artists ever do. Then there's the matter of their impeccable lyricism, worthy of comparison to Sufjan Stevens. The sweet recontouring in their song "The Big Surprise" is delivered by a shaky, yet confident voice that will draw you into the song even more as you begin to connect deeper with the narrator's story.
Going out on a limb to say... We may have already found one of our favorite new acts of the year; and we'd bet dollars to donuts that they sign with a good indie label by the end of the year. No, before the end of Spring! If these guys don't have a record deal (Downtown Recs? Domino?) and some serious momentum going before we see those May flowers, call us out on it and we'll literally send you a dozen donuts as an admission of being wrong.
Until then, enjoy this twofer of tracks the band just released called ACT II: The Big Surprise, and most importantly, show them some support by attending a local show!
